The worst drought in 10 years is wreaking havoc on the East African country of Kenya.
Game parks are littered with animal carcasses, farmers are losing their livestock and crops, and more and more children’s lives are in danger because there is not enough food or water.
After four consecutive failed rainy seasons, the country is on the brink of disaster. One of our team members just returned from project visits to Kenya where she saw the devastation with her own eyes:
…coming into the lowlands you could see how it was getting much dustier and dryer. The cornfields looked poor and in our conversations David always mentioned the drought...
Some farmers were joining us to see some projects…Their eyes were very sad - when I looked at them it was like I could see their hearts dashed into pieces. I have no words to express their despair. There was a heavy silence and then a farmer would ask with a soft, broken voice: “Have you seen the harvest? “ Silence again. All I could say was, “Yes, I have seen it.” One farmer said, “We have to pray.” I said, “Yes… and ask for rain.” He said with a very broken voice, “No… ask for food… the rain is too late… the harvest is gone…
It was not just one farmer. Wherever we went, whatever project we looked at there was a farmer asking me with the same desperation: “Have you seen the harvest… ??
My heart breaks when I think about those people who gave their all to have some food – and now … because of the drought … nothing… all in vain.
Four million Kenyans already don’t know how to feed their children today, let alone tomorrow or the next day. With every day that passes without rain, the children’s prospects for survival become slimmer and slimmer. In some areas 20% of the children under age 5 are already severely malnourished, and the situation is expected to get worse. Please help… $33 will help buy one bag of maize to help the children and their families that are being affected by this devastating drought.
