{"id":1458,"date":"2018-02-26T20:24:38","date_gmt":"2018-02-26T20:24:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.chrf.org\/blog\/?p=1458"},"modified":"2018-02-26T20:31:19","modified_gmt":"2018-02-26T20:31:19","slug":"exciting-news-in-central-uganda","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.chrf.org\/blog\/exciting-news-in-central-uganda\/","title":{"rendered":"Exciting News in Central Uganda!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>CHRF and our partners around the globe truly believe in the phrase\u00a0&#8220;a little, goes a long way&#8221; and a great example of this idea being used in reality is our partner project in a small village in Central Uganda. Beginning\u00a0just a few short years ago as a small feeding and agricultural project, now we are helping provide children and families with food, agricultural training and <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">a life changing education for more than 50 children<\/span>!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Take a look at the wonderful news that we just received from our long time Uganda partner (and CHRF Good Samaritan of the Year) Judi Gentry!<\/p>\n<p><em>Last season we managed to seed some of our 2 acre piece of farmland at Sembabule. Our women&#8217;s Co-op of 16 members worked very hard and the result was a pretty fine harvest. They grew maize, beans and sweet potatoes plus some other vegetables. Their efforts resulted in many sacks of beans and maize flower, etc. It nourished their <strong>16 familes,<\/strong> plus our <strong>9 rescue kids<\/strong> and our <strong>30 street kids!&#8230; for months! <\/strong>Hard to imagine how we could have made it, without that farmland and harvest!<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chrf.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/sembabule.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1461 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.chrf.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/sembabule-300x175.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"175\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.chrf.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/sembabule-300x175.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.chrf.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/sembabule.jpg 320w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<em> Now, the planting season is here&#8230;. but our last harvest was not enough to last until the next planting and the next harvest. We had to use all the beans and maize we&#8217;d saved for planting&#8230; for food!\u00a0 Food is getting short now but we are managing by feeding the kids mostly posho porridge and sweet potatoes. THEN roofed by CHRF! &#8230; and finished (PLASTERED, PAINTED AND DESKS,) &#8230;by Help Uganda Kids.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1462\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1462\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chrf.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/sembabule-4.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-1462 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.chrf.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/sembabule-4-300x223.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"223\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.chrf.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/sembabule-4-300x223.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.chrf.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/sembabule-4.jpg 625w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1462\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Our ex-street kids in their new classroom, with our really fine teacher, Mr. Ian.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><em>But&#8230;the even greater news is&#8230;.\u00a0\u00a0<\/em><strong><em>OUR SCHOOL IS NOW SELF-SUFFICIENT!!<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>A miracle!<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Our school fees and sponsor-ships coming in from donors are enough for books&#8230; to pay two teachers&#8230; and feed the kids and teachers lunch. So it&#8217;s already being self-supporting<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em>We&#8217;re proud of that&#8230; tho we always need more school supplies&#8230;. and another teacher. We have 50 kids in the school now. Some are sponsored and some are paying students from the town.\u00a0<\/em><em>But we also allow our non-sponsored street children to attend lessons.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Here&#8217;s the need we have now:<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em>We need $1000 worth of seeds, starts and fruit trees!!! If we had that , we could plant the entire two acres of fertile soil! We also have built a great, strong chicken coop for 40 chickens and now&#8230; we just need chickens!!! So for a total of $1500, I think our food needs could also dream of being&#8230;<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>SELF-SUPPPORTING!!<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em>Next harvest, we will be able to save seed for the following planting. And the chickens will\u00a0<\/em><em>CERTAINLY be self-supporting.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Our only problem is that the rains are starting!
