Children’s Hunger Relief Fund in Haiti
Since long before the devastating earthquake in January of 2010, Children’s Hunger Relief Fund has supported our partners in Haiti to provide feeding programs, education and desperately needed medical attention for thousands of children and many families. After the earthquake we have relentlessly been working together to first find the children who need our help the most, and second, find out how to best care for and support their precious lives. Recently Children’s Hunger Relief Fund Board Director, Dr. Monte Wilson, who has served on our Board for over twenty years, and international team leader Ken McGrath, returned from another trip to Haiti, visiting and inspecting the life-saving work that our CHRF donors help support. Both Monte and Ken had many stories and messages of thanks and gratitude that they wanted to share with all of our CHRF family and donors. From CHRF Board Director, Dr. Monte Wilson: “As I walk through the hospital outside of Port-Au-Prince, I recall why our work here is so important. The fantastic leadership from our partners running the hospital inspires mothers with sick children to walk up to TWELVE HOURS one way in order to reach this hospital. Yes, the opportunity for medical attention is slim in the entire country, but this hospital has a great reputation for SAVING LIVES. As I step into the emergency care room, my heartbeat is frozen … gone. This moment is timeless caused by the unbelievable images I am forced to take in. The rooms are full, literally wall to wall, by mothers with their sick children waiting to see a doctor. The room is eerily silent, the children are too sick, too ill, too fragile to even cry. A mother asks me to hold her child and I carefully bring the beautiful child close to my chest. As she looks up to me with her beautiful eyes, my heart melts to this child. This child is malnourished, dehydrated and in desperate need of attention, which, thanks to a caring mother and this hospital, she will soon receive. If this hadn’t been caught in time, she would have experienced deformities, stunted growth and yes, even death. For now her tiny body is safely curled up against my chest. The nurse tells me that her nine-month-old body only weighs 15 ounces, less than a pound. I know it must be difficult to imagine, a living baby, a beautiful baby girl, only weighing 15 ounces, LESS THAN A BOTTLE OF SODA (20oz.). Thankfully, soon her body should start recovering and quickly regain strength. How do you hold a child who is suffering and, as a parent, not think of how you would feel if this were your own child? How do you hold a suffering baby and not have every fiber of your being wanting to do anything and everything possible to ensure her health? As my heart melts for this child I find myself in prayer, begging God for His mercy and healing for not only this child but for all of the others in the hospital. But my prayer has already been answered because the children will receive the attention and love they need today at this hospital. My prayer for these children and for the child in my hands has been answered, thanks to donors like YOU. As the time comes to go I say goodbye to the children, knowing that they will receive the help and support that they needed today. As I go I think of the good people, good people like you, who I will ask and then thank for helping these children who are in such desperate need.” Team-leader Ken McGrath was excited to report to us that for LESS then twenty dollars YOU can provide four children in Haiti with one egg everyday for an entire month. An egg has a great amount of protein that can help bring a child to a healthy and happy life. Think of it, for just twenty dollars we can help support four children for a month in order to help regain their health. Thank you to all of our CHRF team and especially our donors as we continue to bring hope to the hopeless and care and protection to these beautiful children, children of God.
