Feeding Earthquake Victims in Nicaragua:

Children’s Hunger Relief Fund has worked closely with our friends and partners in Nicaragua for over 20 years. Developing feeding programs, schools, shelter for children and micro-enterprise loan programs. But this month our partners pleaded for a new kind of aid, sadly one that the US news media did not widely broadcast, emergency relief for their thousands of earthquake victims.

Just a few weeks ago Nicaragua was hit with a 6.6 magnitude earthquake that caused many houses to collapse or incur damage beyond repair. Dozens of children and adults were injured from falling debris. But these poor people hurt were not the only victims. Hundreds of hard-working families are now without homes because their houses have been deemed unsafe by the government. CHRF’s very own long time board member Mario Aviles could not stand idly by and watch as women, children and families slept on the dirt streets so close to his home. Many of these families Mr. Aviles knew from his church community.

And that’s how over 150 people came to start living on Mr. Avlies’ property after he took them in right before Easter! Now their immediate need is for food and water which we are helping to provide for all of these earthquake refugees for as little as $2,350 for a whole month! That’s only about 50 cents to feed these impoverished people for AN ENTIRE DAY! Think of it, for just two quarters we can make all the difference and restore hope in a family’s shattered life in Nicaragua where here in the United States that won’t even buy you a soda!

But our work, along with Mr. Aviles, won’t be finished after a month of feeding and providing for these people. They will need help rebuilding their lives, starting by rebuilding their houses! Fortunately a plan is being developed to begin this process so that these innocent women, children and families no longer have to sleep outside on the ground.

Mr. Aviles has always stepped up to help ease the suffering of his local community. As a local pastor and CHRF associate Church Member we are so humbled by his sacrifice to bring in over 150 women, children and men to his own property, thinking of their hardships and acting immediately!
